Lila watched as Grant ran his hands through his hair while pacing up and down the hall at the Wisteria. His phone was ringing off the hook. Nick had already called him three times, passing along the message that the local media was having a field day with Grant's "fake marriage."
She caught up to him in the hall and grabbed his arm. "Is it really that bad?" He looked like he was going to lie to ease her fears but must have decided against it.
“It's not good. Nick said people are sharing clips of the video from the interview all over social media. They’re saying we look uncomfortable, fake, stiff. Some people are saying I hired you to marry me to help with the campaign.” She averted her eyes. If only they knew how right they were.
"We knew this was a possibility. Guess we just have to deal with it.”
"I don't really think it's that bad, but Senator Henry is an institution around here. Mississippi is often overlooked in the national spotlight, but he’s been a long-standing fixture for us. People just love him. That's part of the reason they don't want to admit he’s basically sat on his ass for the past decade, and let Mississippi fall by the wayside.” Grant paced back and forth. “We need a lot of things to help us improve. The more you're here, the more you'll see it. Better schools, better access to healthcare, better health education. At one point, we were the fattest state in the nation with the highest rate of diabetes and teen pregnancy."
"So, do you think that's it? People just like him?"
"If you're not really paying attention, what's not to like? He looks like your ideal southern grandfather. He's been married for 40 years to the same woman. As far as I know there's never been any type of sex scandal. Or any scandal at all for that matter. He just doesn't do anything."
"My father's in the same boat. He's just popular and comfortable." She was interrupted by the ringing of his phone. Again.
“It’s Nick.” He rolled his eyes and answered the phone. He started pacing again. She heard him sigh. He was silent for a while. Then, his voice raised. It was the first time she’d ever heard him sound mad. "Yeah, I wanted to keep it quiet." Grant looked Lila up and down. "Okay that sounds good. We’ll be here, so just text me when you're headed this way." He hung up the phone, turning it back on vibrate. “He’s coming over to talk about everything.”
“Good. Maybe he can help us smooth this out.” She placed her hand on Grant’s forearm. She stroked his arm lightly. It amazed her that her pulse quickened when she touched her husband. Her off limits husband.
“I sure hope so.” Grant rolled his head back against his shoulders, trying to relieve some tension.
